CULTURAL TYPEFACE

In collaboration with Archana Shekara, this typeface incorporates both religious elements from my childhood and shapes found in Indian cultural jewelry. Inspired heavily by a stained-glass window that sat above the church’s baptistery, the present organic shapes are wound to mimic its imagery and beautiful pattern work. The cursive approach signifies both India’s rich, extravagant culture and the historical beauty and sacredness of Christian architecture.

Each letter’s slight imperfections point to a childhood full of sketching and exploring, most notably during sermons on Sunday morning. A slight nod to my humble beginnings as a designer, the word “haven” further references the atmosphere of that place and the foundation of my work. In the end, these letterforms serve as a perfect union of two cultures and their valued components.
